Saturday with Jenny Howard!!! (August 30)
no class Saturday, September 6 (Holiday)
Class Description:
Class will begin with a 5-6 minute active relaxation period (might be
considered meditation or visualization by some) during which we will
completely relax the body in order to give the mind a chance to warm
up and become an active part of the moving experience. After some
guided visualization, we will move through free movement improvisation
for joint and muscle stimulation purposes. We will continue with a
series of floor exercises that graduate to standing. To awaken and
stir the energy fields within and around us, we will go through some
Sun Salutations adding variations along the way. To wrap up the
warming-up portion of class, we will take our dance vitamins: tendus,
plies and so on. After moving slowly and then rapidly through the
room, we will spend the last 15 or so minutes learning and
artistically exploring a longer combination that hopes to deliver a
balance in the use of the body and its energies. I hope you can make
it to share the fun as I very much enjoy teaching and exploring with
new and familiar folks alike!
Bio:
My name is Jenny. I'm from Indiana where I grew up ballet-ing,
jazz-ing, modern-ing, and tapping for about ten years. I came to Ohio
in pursuit of a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Dance from The Ohio State
University's Department of Dance. Since graduating in 2007, I have
been here, there, and everywhere, but it is currently Ohio where I
have come to a still until the wind picks up and blows me elsewhere.
In addition to dancing and everything that goes with it, I enjoy
photography and a more recent affair with painting (a much more
involved and surprising version of photography, I suppose). Another
major effort I am making is one to become totally ambidextrous and by consequence more balanced in so many aspects too lengthy to describe
here. Most important to me, however, is my current creedo: to try new
things fearlessly and to try old things with the fresh breath of new
ways. For something new, visit my freshly hatched blog at www.whatshowiesblog.blogspot.com and also be on the lookout for other
ART ATTACK happenings around town. (see below for further optional
reading on ART ATTACK).
ART ATTACK! began as a series of guerilla-art "attacks" after which I
picked up the ball and turned it into my Senior Honor's Project at The
Ohio State University in the Department of Dance. Every Sunday for 3
months a small group [of amazingly talented and open-minded young women] gathered to semi-improvisationally create something beautiful
for the public eye utilizing dance combined with other art forms
(chalking, writing, e.g.). Some examples include ::making human
sculptures in crosswalks and bus stops::creating chalk-murals and composing movement in the moment to accompany the pictures::dancing
like the Scarecrow on Ohio State's Oval. Since then, it has evolved
into an even broader series of art works (of all species) created in
public for the public. The main values of ART ATTACK! are that anyone
who wants to do it can, it is easily accessible to viewers verywhere
and that we have a good time doing it. ART ATTACK! is the act of
art-ing simply because it gives us pleasure. If participating is not
your bag, observers are always warmly welcomed.
