Hello Dance Community,

Hope this message finds you all well and deep into dance.

This posting is to inform the community that at the end of December 2009 Columbus Movement Movement will be dissolved. Due to leadership, legal and financial issues cm2 will no longer be able to serve the community in its current capacity. cm2 has been a pivotal part of the growth of the dance community here in Columbus and while it is  hard for me to pass this news on it has been an honor having been a part of such an organization for the last four years. The many community members that helped in creating and running this organization should take great honor in having been a part of its great accomplishments and the part they played in helping to create such a strong and vibrant dance scene here in Columbus.

So what does this mean for the Columbus dance community at large? Well, hopefully not much as far as the services cm2 provided to the community are concerned. Back in September, I met with several members of the dance community and we discussed cm2’s strengths and weaknesses. We talked about components of the organization that should remain and how those would be supported and developed into the future. There were three main components that we agreed should continue to be a part of the dance scene; cm2’s network to the dance community at large, the Columbus Dances Series and the Saturday Community Class Series. I am currently meeting with CoCo Loupe, Noelle Chun and Tim Veach, to make plans for these transitions. Below is how the transfer of these services to the community is taking place:

1. Community Communications:

Over the last five years Columbus Movement Movement has created a network of communication that has connected the dance community by creating a web that has brought dancers to choreographers, choreographers to dancers and audiences to concerts. In the September meeting, we agreed that it was imperative that we just don’t sever this communication network.

CoCo Loupe and I will be working together to keep these connections strong and/or redirected in the best way possible. The cm2 website will remain up as a historic document of cm2’s role in the Columbus dance scene and will have current links to direct users to current dance web presences in Columbus, as well as a link to a community dance blog for day to day dance goings on in the city. The this-week-in-dance Yahoo list serve will continue to run and help keep choreographers, dancers, reviewers and audiences up on what is happening and aid in getting our dance information out to a broader community. It is possible that the Yahoo! list-serve will be migrated to the cm2 blog but we still need to work out the logistics of that system and it could be that it stays where it is for the foreseeable future.

Keep your eyes peeled for any changes that may come down the line. CoCo and I will do our best to make this transition as easy and as fun as possible.
2. Saturday Community Class:

Tim Veach, of Columbus Dance Theatre, will still be very graciously donating the Saturday space for the community classes. (Thank you Tim!!)

Noelle Chun will be working alongside other community teachers and sharing the responsibilities of running the Saturday Community Classes. Working closely together in keeping the spirit of these classes alive and enriching the community, we should look forward to some great classes and fresh new ideas. If you are interested in the Community Classes or have questions please feel free to contact Noelle at noelle.k.chun@gmail.com .

Saturday classes as of January 2010 will be $10 for all. There will no longer be a $5 membership fee. This is still a great price for class and one of the cheapest in town!

I have met several times with Noelle and she is very excited about taking these classes to the next level. Keep up on the classes and get yourself to them. They are going to be great.

3. The Columbus Dance Series:

I (Shawn Hove) will be running the next Columbus Dance Series concert. (It's my last one, let's make it sweet;)!)

Starting next season (2010-2011), the series will remain under Tim Veach of Columbus Dance Theatre. The Columbus Dances series has been a part of the Columbus Dance Theatre’s Season since its establishment in 2005 and has been a great community collaboration between Columbus Movement Movement and CDT. There should be no doubt as to the benefits that this series has created for modern and contemporary dance artists in and outside of Columbus, OH and we look forward to its continuation. Tim Veach, CoCo Loupe and I will be meeting with each other as we look to find ways of keeping the community’s involvement in the series. Stay tuned.

While this may be sad news to see Columbus Movement Movement fade away from the scene, there is no doubt in the strength and excitement in the dance scene here in Columbus. There are a lot of great new things happening out in the community that will continue and expand dance here in Columbus.

All benefits associated with cm2 memberships will end as of December 31, 2009. If there any questions about cm2’s dissolution, please feel free to contact Shawn Hove at shovechor@yahoo.com. Columbus Movement Movement and I wish all the best to the Columbus Dance Scene. MERDE!!!

peace,
Shawn Hove (shovechor@yahoo.com)
Columbus Movement Movement Chair and Production Coordinator
